How to Create a Recovery USB Thumb Drive With XP
Should something happen to your hard disk drive or if your Windows XP operating system becomes corrupted, it is advisable to have a recovery mechanism stored on a separate drive. A USB thumb or \"flash\" drive is one possible place to put a recovery console. You can set this up on your thumb drive using a simple downloadable program.

Instructions

Download Recovery USB Console from the website listed in Resources. Click on the blue \"Download\" button, then on \"Softpedia Secure Download (US)\" on the next page.

Extract \"mkrecovery.zip\" to your desktop. You should now see a folder called \"mkrecovery\" on your desktop. Open the folder, then right-click the \"mkrecover.cmd\" file and choose \"Edit.\"

3.In the text file that comes up, change the \"USBDRV\" setting from \"R:\" to the drive letter indicated for your thumb drive in your \"My Computer\" window. Your thumb drive needs to be connected to your computer for you to see the drive letter.

Change the \"XPSRC\" setting to \"d:\\i386\\winnt32.exe,\" where \"D\" is the drive letter for your CDROM drive.

Save the changes you have made to the text file.

Execute \"mkrecovery.cmd\" by double-clicking on it. Be sure your thumb drive and Windows XP Installation CD are inserted in your computer at this time. Follow the instructions that come up on the program's interface. This creates a recovery console on your USB drive.

Tips & Warnings
It is very important that you have the correct drive letter for the USB drive in the \"mkrecover.cmd\" configuration or you may erase data from your main hard disk drive.
